Ideas VS Leadership - Israel in the summer of 2006

I went to Israel to visit my family during July of 2006 while the Second Lebanon War was still going on. While I was there, I offered some of my ideas in order to boost the travel industry of the Galilee as soon as the war ends.

Not to my surprise, many Israelis already suggested many of my ideas and even much more advanced ones. I say "not to my surprise" because Israelis are by nature very vigilant people who take the problems of the country very personal.

It appeared that the people of Israel would boost the Galilee recovery within days after the war would be over. I was very excited about this scenario because I was just completely disgusted with my experience with the authorities of Louisiana in the previous 10 months since Hurricane Katrina. At last, I thought, I will see some real success.

However, as soon as the war ended, when I expected hundreds of thousands of Israelis and even Christians from all over the world to go and support the local economy of the Galilee, nothing really happened. As a matter of fact, two weeks after the war was over, there was a need to layoff about 7% of the employees of the travel related businesses of the North of Israel.

The fact is that even most people were willing to help the economy of the Galilee, they did not have good leadership and specific plan of action and as a result, all the good will of the people went for vain and was wasted.

Needless to say that this was very disappointing for me. I was hoping for "miracle like" recovery of the Galilee so I can call back the people in Louisiana and tell them how things really need to be taken care of. Instead, that experience in Israel became embarrassment.

That experience illustrated me strongly something that I suspected for a long time: Ideas alone are NOT enough!

We need leadership that will set specific goals and specific call for action and inspire the people to take that action. In addition, we need monitoring system that will announce to the public on a daily basis our progress. Are we moving too fast (this could also be bad), too slow, what kind of modifications we need to do and more.

In addition, I believe that the most important expect is the use of group dynamic. People are more likely to take action when they are part of a group. This is one of the foundations of my suggested ideas.
